The resident of the Emmaus House is considering a permanent commitment to a celibate priesthood, even as he lives in a community of men who aspire to the same goal. As a college student, the resident will be accustomed to studying and socializing with individuals of both sexes. Thus the resident not only belongs to the Emmaus House community, but also, in part, to the larger university community. We are called to relate to both sexes in healthy ways. We must be men who know our strengths and weaknesses, and are able to deal adequately with the joys, tensions and temptations which will result from our commitment. Normal association with women in a variety of social contexts provides for healthy socio-personal development and the discernment of God’s will. Friendships with both men and women are entirely compatible with living a celibate life. Joining with others at parties, prayer, study and other social gatherings is appropriate for the personal development of a college age student. However, focusing exclusively on one person or a relationship which fosters unhealthy attitudes would be considered inappropriate. When faced with doubts, questions or concerns, the resident is encouraged to share his feelings with his Spiritual Director or appropriately with the priest director.
